Ukraine continues to rank among the top ten exporters of walnuts globally, indicating the significant potential of this agricultural product. By the end of 2023, the country exported approximately 31,000 tons of walnuts, generating over $77 million in revenue.

Historian Vadim Nazarenko reminded that the primary markets for these exports remain in Muslim countries and the European Union, particularly in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where walnut consumption per capita is the highest—375 grams per person annually. He also explained the origin of the name in the Ukrainian language and why the nut is referred to as "voloshky."

Etymology of the Name

The term "волоський горіх" (voloshky nut) derives from the word "волохи," referring to the territories of modern Romania and Moldova, from where these nuts were initially imported to Ukraine. Today, Romania itself imports a small quantity of Ukrainian walnuts—around 2,000 tons annually. In various languages, the name for this nut varies: in Serbian and Croatian, it is simply "orех," while in Russian it is "грецкий орех." The Greek term "Καρυδιά" originated from the historical region of Caria in Asia Minor, where these trees were cultivated.

Among the South Slavs, particularly the Serbs and Croats, the term "orех" is used without further specification. This may indicate that in their culture, the walnut has become such a common product that it does not require additional definitions. In contrast, Slovenians refer to it as "royal nut," which may reflect the high value of this product in their culture.

In Ukrainian, the name "волоський горіх" serves not only as a straightforward term for this popular product but also as a testament to the rich history of cultural exchanges and influences between peoples. This nut has become a vital element in the culinary traditions of many countries around the world.
