The future national security advisor to elected US President Donald Trump, Michael Waltz, is exploring several options to end the war in Ukraine. One scenario involves freezing the conflict and initiating negotiations, while another suggests Ukraine joining NATO in exchange for territorial concessions. This is reported by CNN.
According to the publication, although the details of the strategy are still being worked out, Trump’s officials are likely to advocate for a ceasefire at an early stage to temporarily freeze the conflict while both sides engage in talks.
It is expected that representatives of the Trump administration will also insist that European allies and NATO take on a larger share of the financial burden to support Ukraine.
The plans being considered by Waltz include a proposal from Kellogg, who served as a national security advisor during Trump’s first administration.
As CNN reminds us, Kellogg's plan stipulates that continued US military aid to Ukraine would depend on Kyiv's participation in "peace negotiations with Russia" and "the official US policy of a ceasefire and resolution of the war through negotiations." Meanwhile, Ukraine's desire to join NATO would be "delayed" for an extended period to "bring Russia to the negotiating table."
According to the publication, Waltz has also considered a separate proposal approved by former Trump ambassador to Germany, Rick Grenell.
Grenell had previously expressed support for the creation of "autonomous regions" within Ukraine, although he did not elaborate on how this would be implemented.
