The EU Council on Monday, January 27, decided to suspend part of the visa facilitation agreement between Georgia and the European Union. This information is available on the EU Council's website.
Now, Georgian diplomats and officials will be required to obtain visas to travel to EU countries.
The press service noted that this decision is a response to the "foreign agents law" adopted by Georgia in 2024, along with a package of laws regarding "family values and the protection of minors."
"The actions taken by Georgia violate the fundamental principles upon which the facilitation agreement was established and contradict the interests of the EU and its member states.
This proposal also responds to the brutal repression by Georgian authorities against peaceful protesters, politicians, and independent media, which began after the government announced on November 28, 2024, that it would not resume negotiations with the EU until 2028," they stated.
