Romania has authorized the downing of drones that illegally invade its airspace.

The Romanian Parliament has passed a law that permits the military to destroy drones that illegally cross the country's airspace. This decision takes into account the level of threat and risks to people and property, reports Reuters.

Romania, a member of both the EU and NATO, shares a 650-kilometer border with Ukraine and has repeatedly reported the fall of debris from Russian drones during attacks on Ukrainian ports.

Despite opposition from ultra-nationalist politicians, the law received support from both chambers of parliament. The document outlines the regulations for controlling airspace for both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to the new regulations:

- Manned aircraft must first undergo identification, attempts at communication, interception, and warning shots. Destruction is only permissible in the case of aggressive actions.

- Drones may be neutralized, taken under control, or shot down depending on the level of threat, with destruction being a last resort.

Additionally, NATO and EU allied forces stationed in Romania will have the right to participate in such actions in accordance with international agreements.
