Russians have taken an "operational pause" in the Kursk direction. What implications does this have for the Ukrainian Armed Forces?

The Russian occupation forces announced a "temporary operational pause" following unsuccessful attempts to capture the village of Makhnivka throughout January 2025. This pertains to the Kursk direction, where Ukrainian defenders are conducting a military operation.

This information is included in the daily report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The agency reports that, according to a pro-Russian military blogger close to the Kremlin, Russian forces were compelled to abandon their positions near Makhnivka due to the effective use of Ukrainian drones and adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, the blogger anticipates a resurgence of fighting for the settlement when weather conditions improve. The ground may either freeze or completely dry out.

Additionally, as of February 4, Russian troops continued their attacks in the area of the Ukrainian foothold in the Kursk region, particularly near Sverdlikovo, Mykolaivka, and Makhnivka, although without significant success. Russian sources also report counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to the northwest of Suja in the Mykolaiv-Darino and Sverdlikovo areas, as well as south of Suja near Makhnivka and Kurilivka.

The Russian side claims certain successes in the areas of Stara and Nova Sorochyna, Russkoye, and Cherkasskoye Porechye, asserting that Ukrainian forces have been pushed back from the northern outskirts of Sverdlikovo. However, another Russian war correspondent confirmed that Russian troops have not managed to establish a foothold near Makhnivka.

Earlier, "Telegraph" reported that South Korean intelligence confirmed that North Korean troops, fighting on the side of Russia against Ukraine in the Kursk region, have likely been absent from combat operations since mid-January. The reason for the withdrawal of North Korean military forces from the front line is significant losses.
