Pope Francis, who was previously hospitalized, experienced a sudden bronchospasm that led to a critical deterioration in his condition. The pontiff was urgently placed on a ventilator. This information was reported by the Vatican press office.
According to available information, on February 28, the head of the Catholic Church suffered a single episode of bronchospasm – a dangerous condition where the muscles of the bronchi contract sharply, hindering the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide from the body.
Due to this condition, the Pope inadvertently inhaled vomit, which caused an immediate decline in his well-being.
“The Holy Father was promptly subjected to bronchial aspiration to clear his airways and was connected to non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which improved the oxygen levels [in his blood],” the Vatican reported.
The press office clarified that during the necessary medical procedures, Pope Francis remained conscious; however, forecasts regarding his further condition remain cautious.
“It will take approximately 24 to 48 hours for doctors to assess the clinical condition of the Pope after the single episode of bronchospasm.
Thanks to non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the oxygen levels stabilized to a level similar to what it was before the episode,” the Holy See noted.
