The Pentagon imposes restrictions on transgender service members in the U.S. military.

Under the new Pentagon regulations, transgender service members will be removed from the U.S. military unless they obtain special permission. This restriction applies to both new recruits and active-duty personnel. The memorandum submitted to the court expands the ban on active service members, reports Reuters.

According to the new policy, the military will no longer accept transgender individuals into service and will cease funding for gender transition procedures for service members. To continue their service, transgender military personnel must obtain permission, which can only be granted if there is a significant government interest and it supports combat readiness. The memorandum also stipulates the need for the identification of transgender military members within 30 days, and discharges must begin within 60 days.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that military personnel with gender dysphoria will be "treated with dignity and respect."

According to the Department of Defense, there are approximately 1.3 million service members in the U.S. military, with advocates estimating the number of transgender individuals to be around 15,000.
