"Whole onions should be stored where they won't sprout. Sprouting ruins their flavor, making them bitter and less tasty," - Karen notes.
Therefore, it is better to keep them in a drawer, cupboard, or dark corner of the kitchen, away from moist vegetables like potatoes, carrots, or celery. These vegetables release moisture that can quickly spoil the onions.
Onions need to "breathe," so they should be stored in mesh bags, perforated containers, or wire baskets—these provide a steady airflow.
"If onions are stored in a dry, dark place with good ventilation, they will stay crisp for up to three months," - Karen emphasizes.
However, peeled onions are better kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container to prevent rapid spoilage and bacterial growth. In this form, they will stay fresh for 10-14 days.
In general, if you follow these simple rules, whole onions can last up to three months, peeled onions up to two weeks, and chopped onions for about a week.
