In Volyn, a 19-year-old mother has starved her infant to death. The Volyn Appeals Court has sentenced the woman to two years of actual imprisonment. This information was reported by the Volyn Regional Prosecutor's Office.
Due to the mother's deliberate actions, the infant did not survive even two months.
After giving birth to a healthy daughter in January 2024, the mother intentionally and systematically failed to feed her, showed no concern for her health, and did not seek medical assistance for the child in a timely manner. The baby died.
According to the conclusion of the forensic examination, the child's death was caused by malnutrition.
The first-instance court had issued a sentence that did not involve actual imprisonment.
Disagreeing with this decision, prosecutors appealed it.
With the principled stance of the prosecutors from the department for the protection of children's interests and combating domestic violence of the regional prosecutor's office, the Volyn Appeals Court overturned the first-instance court's verdict, which had sentenced the 19-year-old woman, found guilty of grossly neglecting her duties to care for the child, resulting in severe consequences under the Criminal Code of Ukraine, to two years of imprisonment with a one-year probation period.
Accepting the prosecutors' position, the Appeals Court imposed a sentence of two years of actual imprisonment on the woman.
