The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that conducting elections during wartime necessitates constitutional amendments. According to him, elections will take place after the active phase of the war has ended and the state of martial law has been lifted. He made this remark in an interview with journalist Piers Morgan.

“Regarding my legitimacy: 73% of Ukrainians elected me. I have always supported elections. However, during wartime, elections require constitutional changes and significant legal adjustments. The key issue concerns not only legal aspects but also the human factor. How will soldiers in the trenches vote? What about the millions of Ukrainians in occupied territories? Do their voices no longer matter? And what about the 8 million Ukrainians who have found themselves abroad due to the war?” the President said.

Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that elections will occur after the active phase of the war ends and the martial law is lifted.

“We are defending democracy, and elections are very important. But let's be honest: ending martial law right now is exactly what Putin wants. If martial law is lifted, most of our army will return home – that is their right. But who will defend Ukraine then? Without security guarantees, Russia will invade again,” he stated.

The head of state added that there can be no compromises regarding sovereignty.

“We cannot violate the Constitution of Ukraine, nor can we recognize occupied territories as Russian. These lands are temporarily occupied, and that means temporarily. Regardless of what Putin or anyone else abroad wants, we will never recognize them as Russian. There can be no compromises on the issue of sovereignty,” Zelensky declared.

Let us remind you, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, Oksana Markarova reported that the question of holding elections in Ukraine by the end of 2025 has not yet been discussed with the American side. At the same time, she emphasized that Ukraine is open to dialogue if the administration of President of the USA Donald Trump raises this issue.
