The Ministry of Defense has announced that it has been actively investigating the causes of abnormal wear of 120-millimeter mines for the past three weeks.
The use of these batches of munitions in the Defense Forces, as well as their issuance to combat units, has been suspended until the reasons for the abnormal detonation are determined.
Additionally, a batch of the supplied munitions has been withdrawn for further examination. At the same time, imported mines will be supplied.
“Preliminary results from the interdepartmental commission investigating the supply of defective 120-mm mortar shells suggest possible causes for the defects, particularly substandard propellant charges or violations of storage conditions, which led to their damage,” the Ministry of Defense stated.
It has been reported that the State Bureau of Investigations has initiated a criminal case regarding this matter. Appropriate personnel decisions concerning responsible officials will be made based on the results of the interdepartmental commission's work.
Meanwhile, the agency noted that “the absence of comments in the public sphere does not mean that the Ministry of Defense is inactive or unresponsive to information received from the military or that which appears, particularly in the media.”
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, details of the investigation remain confidential.
“The Ministry of Defense operates within a closed perimeter to ensure maximum efficiency and safety. Given the ongoing Russian aggression, information about the progress of the work is sensitive and thus remains restricted,” they added.
