The State Migration Service of Ukraine has responded to citizens' inquiries regarding the possibility of holding two valid international passports.
They reminded that according to current legislation, every citizen of Ukraine is entitled to possess two valid international passports. For instance, if an individual applies for a new international passport while the old one is still valid, they are allowed to keep it.
The previous (or one of the previous) international passports must be canceled if:
- its validity period has expired;
- there is a change in the information.
Additionally, there are cases where the old passport is needed for specific reasons when traveling abroad. In such instances, the canceled passport may not be confiscated upon the request of the individual to whom the document belongs.
An exception is the change of surname – in this case, it is not possible to retain the old international passport as valid.
The SMS reminded that an international passport is issued:
◾ for four years – to individuals under the age of 16;
◾ for ten years – to individuals aged 16 and older.
