The European Commission has proposed a new support package for Ukraine aimed at ensuring the security of its energy system and facilitating its complete integration into the European energy market. This was reported by the EC press service.
Specifically, this package will ensure the full connection of Ukraine's electricity market with the EU, as well as further integration into the EU gas sector. "This will also enhance the security of supply to Ukraine and the resilience of its energy system by significantly accelerating domestic electricity production from renewable sources," the press release states.
The EC noted that this package will enable the complete connection of Ukraine's electricity market with the EU by the beginning of 2027, together with Moldova, as well as further integration into the EU gas sector, provided that Ukraine "significantly accelerates the necessary market reforms."
"This will also strengthen the security of supply to Ukraine and the region as a whole, as the Commission will assist with the necessary gas purchases. Importantly, by significantly accelerating domestic electricity production from renewable sources, this package will enhance the overall resilience of the Ukrainian energy system," the press release asserts.
It is emphasized that Ukraine's full integration into the EU energy market will be part of the overall security guarantees that the EU can provide, as well as an effective prerequisite for reconstruction, since energy security is crucial for ensuring investment flows throughout the country.
Commenting on the proposed package, Ursula von der Leyen said: "For three years, Russia has tried to plunge Ukraine into darkness by relentlessly attacking its energy infrastructure. This must end forever. With the package we are presenting today, Europe will provide Ukraine with a sustainable, secure, and competitive energy system. More renewable energy and full integration of energy markets will contribute to greater energy security for both Ukraine and the European Union."
Energy Security and Integration Package for Ukraine
The package being proposed today in Kyiv consists of:
These new measures will build on the EU's support of over 2 billion euros provided over the past three years to enhance the resilience of Ukraine's energy system and ensure people's access to energy. Support will primarily be channeled through the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, as well as humanitarian aid and revenues from frozen Russian assets.
