The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has appointed South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This was reported by CNN.
She is set to lead the agency overseeing U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Secret Service.
According to the publication, Trump sought to have a loyal supporter head the department, which is a priority for him and crucial to his domestic agenda.
Noem was previously on the shortlist for the position of Vice President of the United States. However, her relationship with Trump changed following the release of the book "No Way Back: The Truth About What Politics Is and How We Move America Forward," CNN adds.
In the book, Noem recounted an incident where she killed her 14-month-old wire-haired pointer, Cricket, when he failed to exhibit the traits of an "ideal hunting dog." She later claimed that "such jokes" were intended to demonstrate how capable she is of performing a difficult task when necessary.
