A new fine may soon be introduced for car owners in Ukraine, with amounts reaching up to 17,000 hryvnias. The draft law №10216 has already been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada, aimed at combating the falsification of vehicle mileage. Vehicles with "rolled back" mileage will be at risk of significant financial penalties.

SubscribeManipulations with odometers, or "rolling back mileage," have become widespread in Ukraine. Experts estimate that approximately 40% of used cars on the market show signs of mileage falsification. This type of fraud benefits sellers by allowing them to inflate the actual price of the vehicle, creating the illusion that the car is less worn than it actually is. As a result, buyers end up overpaying significant amounts, believing they are purchasing a reliable and less worn vehicle.
The goal of draft law №10216 is to introduce legal responsibility for intentional mileage falsification. According to the initiative, fines for selling cars with "rolled back" mileage will range from 8,500 to 17,000 hryvnias. Thus, individuals engaging in such manipulations to deceive buyers will face serious financial penalties.
Experts assess the likelihood of this draft law being adopted as high, given that the issue of protecting consumer rights in the automotive market is becoming increasingly relevant. If new penalties are enacted, it can be expected that manipulations with odometers may significantly decrease. Clearly, some sellers will be forced to change their sales approaches and provide accurate information about the condition of their vehicles.
