On Wednesday, January 29, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Remembrance for the Heroes of Kruty. This day honors the bravery of students and gymnasium pupils who defended the young Ukrainian People's Republic from the advancing Bolshevik forces in 1918 near Kruty.
The battle took place at the Kruty railway station, located 130 kilometers from Kyiv. Approximately 400 young men, including students from Kyiv University, gymnasium pupils, and cadets, engaged in an unequal fight against several thousand Bolshevik troops. The defenders managed to delay the enemy, destroy infrastructure, and buy time for the UPR government to sign the Brest Peace Treaty, which secured international recognition for Ukraine.
After the battle, around 30 captured young men were executed by the Bolsheviks.
This battle has become a symbol of heroism and self-sacrifice among the Ukrainian youth, who stood up to defend their homeland amid extreme military and political tension.
