Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating a potential data leak involving the Chinese company DeepSeek.

Microsoft and OpenAI have initiated an investigation into the potential unauthorized acquisition of information regarding technologies from ChatGPT's developer by a group linked to the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, reports Bloomberg.

According to sources from the agency, Microsoft security experts monitored a group of individuals last autumn, whom they suspected might be connected to DeepSeek.

Insiders claim that this group has stolen a substantial amount of data through OpenAI's application programming interface (API).

As a technology partner and major investor in OpenAI, Microsoft has already informed the company about the activities of this group.

Bloomberg also adds that such actions may violate OpenAI's terms of use or indicate attempts to bypass restrictions on the volume of data available with a purchased license.

According to Reuters, OpenAI plans to work closely with the U.S. government to best protect its most effective models from adversaries and competitors attempting to seize its technologies.

“As a leading AI developer, we are taking countermeasures to protect our intellectual property, including a rigorous process for integrating advanced capabilities into our released models, and we believe that as we move forward, it is critically important to collaborate closely with the U.S. government to best protect our most effective models from attempts by adversaries and competitors to acquire American technologies,” stated OpenAI.

As previously reported by “Judicial and Legal Newspaper,” the Chinese DeepSeek has become the most popular AI application in the U.S., surpassing ChatGPT. Following its release,  shares of Nvidia and other companies plummeted.

Additionally, Donald Trump referred to the Chinese DeepSeek as a wake-up call for U.S. technologies.

We also reported that the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council Andrey Kovalenko stated that DeepSeek is one of the tools for intelligence gathering.
