The leader of the Edinburgh City Council, Cami Day, has resigned following the initiation of a police investigation against him for alleged misconduct involving Ukrainian refugees. This was reported by the BBC.
According to the tabloid, he sent messages to the refugees from Ukraine, asked them explicitly sexual questions, and suggested meeting for a glass of wine. The Ukrainians felt uncomfortable but were afraid to refuse, considering Day's influence.
In light of these events, the leader of the Edinburgh City Council decided to step down as chair. In his letter, he stated that recent media coverage of his personal life "diminishes the important work" that his team is doing for the city, which is why he feels it is "time to step down as leader." He also assured that he would cooperate with law enforcement during the investigation, although the police have not yet contacted him, he noted.
The Ukrainian consulate in Edinburgh also expressed concern over these reports.
They stated that they are awaiting the results of the investigation and hope for a fair resolution to the matter.
It is noted that Day has been a member of the Edinburgh council since 2008 and has led the city council since 2022, representing the Labour Party, which holds a minority in the council. The Edinburgh City Council is now set to elect a new leader on December 19.
