On Wednesday, December 11, former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted to take his own life in a Seoul detention center. This was reported by the Yonhap agency, citing a representative from the correctional service.

The head of the detention center, Shin Yong-hae, stated that the ex-minister's health condition is stable.

Following the unsuccessful attempt, Kim is being held in a protective cell, and his health remains stable, Shin Yong-hae informed lawmakers during parliamentary hearings.

The former South Korean defense minister is being held in detention on charges of rebellion related to the investigation of a declaration of martial law.

Previously, “Judicial Newspaper” wrote that the South Korean police have launched an investigation against the president on suspicion of treason. The complaints mention not only Yoon Suk-yeol but also former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff Park An-soo, and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min. All of them are accused of treason due to the declaration of martial law on December 3.

It was reported that the President of South Korea announced the imposition of martial law in the country. According to him, the decision was made to "eradicate pro-North Korean forces and support constitutional order in the country."

Subsequently, any political activity and protests were banned in the country, and all media were placed under government control. Additionally, the parliament building was blocked, with military personnel present.

Later, the South Korean parliament voted to lift the martial law in the country.
