The newly elected US president Donald Trump has proposed that Mexico and Canada become states of the USA if they wish to continue receiving subsidies. This was reported by Newsweek.
It is noted that Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico if they do not address the issue of drug smuggling and illegal border crossings.
“We subsidize Canada by over $100 billion a year. We subsidize Mexico by nearly $300 billion. We shouldn’t be subsidizing – why are we subsidizing these countries? If we are going to subsidize them, let them become part of the USA,” said Trump. “We subsidize Mexico, we subsidize Canada, and we subsidize many countries around the world. All I want to do is have equal, quick, but fair playing conditions.”
The newly elected president made a similar remark regarding Canada. According to media reports, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the newly elected president during a meeting on November 29 at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida that the tariff plans would devastate Canada’s economy. In response, the Republican jokingly suggested, “Maybe Canada should become the 51st state.”
Trump also stated in a post on Truth Social on November 25 that he would impose a 10% tariff on China “over and above any additional tariffs” if Beijing does not combat fentanyl smuggling.
“Tariffs, if used correctly, are a very powerful tool, not only economically but also for achieving other goals beyond the economy,” Trump noted.
