What needs to be done on Mikhailovskaya Parent Saturday
The first thing to do on this memorial day is to go to the church and pray for the deceased relatives, attend the memorial service, write and submit notes with the names of the deceased, and light candles for their repose.
When going to the church, it is essential to bring food items that are traditionally left on the memorial table. These can include: baked goods, kissel, sweets, fruits, kutya, pancakes, and eggs.

Upon arriving at the cemetery, one should tidy up the area, clean around the grave, light a candle or lamp, and leave memorial food.
ATTENTION: In some Ukrainian cities, it is currently dangerous to visit cemeteries due to ongoing military actions in the areas. Before making such a decision, check whether it is safe to do so in your city and do not ignore air raid alerts.
Upon returning home, it is necessary to arrange a memorial meal, inviting all relatives and close friends of the deceased. Remembrance should be conducted in a calm atmosphere, avoiding festivities and celebrations.
On the memorial table, you can place all the dishes that the deceased relative enjoyed in life.
At the common table, it is customary to leave an empty seat for the deceased and set cutlery for them. This is done in case the soul of the deceased decides to visit their loved ones.
On Parent Day, it is customary to give alms and assist those in need.
What is prohibited on November 2, 2024
This day has its prohibitions that everyone should be aware of, namely:
- It is prohibited to refuse to hold memorial services, to go to church, and to pray for the repose of the soul;
- One should not harbor resentment towards anyone, devise revenge plans, or scheme to cause harm;
- It is inappropriate to speak ill of the deceased or recall their mistakes;
- Pouring alcohol on the grave is forbidden;
- Hosting noisy celebrations and parties is not allowed;
- It is undesirable to celebrate birthdays;
- Weddings or church ceremonies should not be held on this day;
- Sticking cigarettes into the ground is prohibited;
- It is forbidden to argue, dispute, create conflicts, swear, shout loudly, or quarrel.
